Bean Bag Toss

Have students take turns tossing a bean bag onto the mat. Then, have them hopscotch down to where it landed. When they reach the number it landed on, either call out that number squared (if it is a double number) or it’s square root (if single space). For example, if the bean bag lands on 36, the student would say, “The square root of 36 is 6.” If it lands on an 8, the student would say, “Eight squared is 64.”
Grade 4, Grade 5

Square Root Hopscotch

To reinforce teaching about square roots, have students hopscotch the mat starting from the top (10×10) and ending at the start (1x). As they hop, have them call out the square root of each number. For example, the square root of 64 is 8. The square root of 49 is 7, etc.

Grade 8

Squares

This mat is useful to reinforce teaching about square numbers. Once students know that a number multiplied by itself makes a square, have them hopscotch down the mat using that vocabulary. For example, 5 squared is 25. 6 squared is 36.

Grade 4

Multiplication Hopscotch

Have students hop both feet onto 1 and 1. Then, have them hop one foot on the product, 1. Continue with this pattern (two and two, and then the product, four, and so on). As they hopscotch down the mat, encourage them to shout out the multiplication sentence they are on. For example, 1 times 1 is 1! 2 times 2 is 4!

Grade 3, Grade 4

Which month?

Which month?
Have students use the mat to figure out the answer to the following types of questions. Have them jump down the mat to find which month is the answer or to check their answers if they think they already know.
What month comes after May?
What is two months before September?
What is the last month of the year?
What month is 14 months from today?
What number month is August?

PreK, Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Number the Months

Write the numbers 1-12 on cards/paper and have students place them beside their corresponding month. Then, have students jump down the mat saying the month and its ordinal number. For example, “January is the first month, February is the second month, etc.”

PreK, Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Charting Birth Months

After doing the activity above use that information to make a bar chart with the class graphing their birth months.

Grade 1, Grade 2

Birthday Month

Have students stand on their birth month (or alongside if crowded). Have them call out their month in order, starting with the kids with birthdays in January. Observe which month has the most birthdays, the fewest.

PreK, Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Word Clapper

Create word cards that match words on the mat. Place cards in a large hat or a box. The student draws a word and then hops on the mat to the word. When the student finds the word, they jump on the word three times, saying the word and clapping simultaneously.

PreK, Kindergarten, Grade 1, Grade 2

Mad Word Hatter

Create word cards that match words on the mat. Place cards in a large hat or a box. The student draws a word and then hops on the mat to the word. When the student finds the word, they shout the word (if the learning environment permits loud noises.) The student places the word card on the corresponding word and goes to the hat to select another word.
