Learn ordinal numbers with movement!
Practicing positional words can be an energetic activity with the Ordinal Numbers Hop! Implement new movement-based activities in your elementary school classroom to help students understand ordinal numbers and to expand their math vocabulary.
The Ordinal Numbers Hop covers numbers one through ten. Each block on the mat includes a numeral, a picture representing the ordinal number, and the ordinal number spelled out in large, bold text. With its bright colors, this mat will keep visual and kinesthetic learners engaged!
Young children will become more fluent with numbers as they jump, step, and skip their way through new kinesthetic activities. Best of all, physical activity will reinforce students’ learning and improve their memory retention. Watch their math vocabulary expand with new positional word games and activities on this mat!
Students will be able to identify, read, and count in order all of the ordinal numerals and number words one through ten. Early readers will have strong number and word recognition after repeated use of this mat. They will be able to communicate what an object’s position is in a sequence. Students as young as kindergarten can develop an understanding of positional language and differentiate between cardinal and ordinal numbers.
As a result, these students will be confident in further developing their math and reading skills – including solving math word problems!

Sample Activity: Who Finishes First?
- Identify two ordinal numbers for the student. Ask the student to determine which number would finish a race first. For example, “Who would finish a race first – the person in second place or fifth place?”
- Have students jump on the mat to see which number is closer to the start and would finish first.
