What will the students like to see every day? Educational classroom rugs have been a staple in schools for as long as we can remember. The Facts About Educational Rugs

Educational rugs in the classroom can be a great addition as they can brighten educators’ teaching spaces and provide unique, tactile ways to learn. However, there are a few downsides to typical classroom carpets. Some of these are:

  • They are not portable. Once you place a big elementary classroom rug down, you’ll want to leave it there in that spot for a while!
  • You can’t easily switch out the design whenever you want. Whatever rug you select will be the classroom decor you and your students look at all year.
  • Without proper care, they can get dirty from students’ shoes tracking dirt into the classroom. Cleaning elementary classroom rugs is a big chore since they’re fabric.

Classroom Floor Mats from Math & Movement

Math and Movement is a multi-sensory approach to learning designed to engage students through movement-based strategies. Our evidence-based program supplements your school’s curriculum and makes learning fun and effective.

Using data, research, and years of collective teaching experience, we have created an extensive collection of kinesthetic educational materials. These resources include floor mats, stickers, and online tools to help your students understand and enjoy math.

In this blog, we wanted to share an alternative to classroom rugs. Our floor mats offer the same tactile learning benefits on a large scale as classroom rugs do but without some of the downsides.

Our classroom mats are made of heavy-duty vinyl and are extremely durable. They can last for over ten years with proper care.

Our products come in various sizes. Floor mats range from  18 inches wide by 40 inches long to 10 feet by 10 feet. The most popular sizes are 30 in x 200 in, 5 ft x 5 ft, and 10 ft x 10 ft.

Our larger mats come in two pieces with heavy-duty velcro on the ends to put them together. This makes them easier to handle. Every classroom floor plan can find its match!

Most of our products target PreK through fifth grade, but we also have some options for older grades as well. Every student can benefit from learning through movement. So, we aim to make our materials accessible to as many skill levels as possible. Most of our floor mats focus on math and literacy, teaching every concept from multiplication and shapes to sight words and the alphabet.

Floor Mat Material

Our floor mats are made of vinyl, not fabric, but they can be placed on classroom floors to display popular math and literacy concepts like a classroom rug.

Our vinyl floor mats are:

  • Latex-free
  • Phthalate-free
  • Waterproof
  • NFPA 701 certified for fire resistance

Additionally, our academic mats are designed by local artists and teachers. They are printed in-house at our shop in Upstate New York. Each mat is hand-cut and packaged! With your purchase, you support a small business.

How to Use Math & Movement Floor Mats

Students can interact with Math & Movement floor mats in various ways. They can step, jump, crawl, trace, or use manipulatives on the mats.

Including these simple movements in your lessons will enhance your students’ comprehension and retention of new concepts. Additionally, our materials are very versatile and can be used for multiple lessons or across grade levels.

Why Movement Works

Kinesthetic learning is scientifically proven to benefit and enhance a student’s learning. Research shows that exercise supports the growth of the hippocampus, a region of the brain responsible for learning and memory.

Exercise increases oxygen-rich blood flow to the brain, allowing it to function efficiently. Physical activity also stimulates the brain to release a protein called BDNF, which promotes neuron growth, maintenance, and repair. As a result, neural pathways of new information can develop!

Finally, exercise stimulates the release of dopamine and nonadrenaline, which are hormones that reduce stress. This creates the ideal circumstances and mindset for children to learn.

Pros of Math & Movement Floor Mats

So, we shared some of the cons of classroom rugs and how movement enhances learning. Why else should you add Math & Movement floor mats to your classroom? What makes our mats worthwhile?

Made to Last

We know many teachers who have used their Math & Movement mats for over 10 years! With proper care, our mats can withstand daily classroom use for multiple school years.

Easy to Clean

Since our floor mats are vinyl, they can easily be cleaned with a mixture of water and soap. Say goodbye to the heavy, tedious carpet cleaners!

You might notice some dirt or scuff marks on your mats, especially if students are using them with their shoes on. To clean your mats, spray the material with soapy water and wipe away the debris with a cloth!

Can Be Stored Away and Switched Out

Have your students completed a lesson on one mat and are ready to move on to the next concept? No problem! Educators can easily roll up and store away our mats.

Our team has found that rolling up the mats when they’re not in use works well to save space. To store your mat, start at the bottom and use your hands and wrists to roll so that the printed side of the mat is on the outside. When you finish rolling, the name of the mat at the top should be visible. This way, it will be easy to identify your mats when they’re put away!

You can use painter’s or masking tape to secure the loose top end of the mat to the rest of the roll. We have found that painter’s or masking tape is easy to remove and does not damage the printed vinyl surface of the mat.

For large velcro mats, fold one half on top of the other and follow the same process, rolling up both halves together.

Math & Movement also has plenty of storage options for your materials. Our wooden cart and metal cart options have wheels on the bottom so educators can roll their mats from one classroom to the next!

We also have large bags with handles to carry your larger mats in. Teachers can keep their carts in a corner, a closet, or under a shelf or desk. Storage bags can be set up inside a closet or cubby.

Our team has also written instructions for building your own storage unit for your mats!
