Reaching One

Create index cards with various fractions that can be found on the mat. Pick a card and find that fraction on the mat. Now, determine how far you are from one whole by walking the fraction boxes until you reach the whole. Repeat the process with a new card.

Examples:
If you’re on 4/5ths, how many more 5ths until you reach the whole?
If you’re on 2/8ths, how many more 8ths until you reach the whole?
If you’re on 4/10ths, how many more 10ths until you reach the whole?
If you’re on 3/6ths, how many more 6ths until you reach the whole?
If you’re on 5/7ths, how many more 7ths until you reach the whole?
If you’re on 1/3rd, how many more 3rds until you reach the whole?
If you’re on 1/4th, how many more 4ths until you reach the whole?
If you’re on 3/9ths, how many more 9ths until you reach the whole?
If you’re on 2/5ths, how many more 5ths until you reach the whole?
If you’re on 6/10ths, how many more 10ths until you reach the whole?

Grade 4

Where’s My Place?

Create a vertical number line with zero through one on the perimeter of the mat (tape on the floor or printed on paper). Create index cards with fractions (ex: ¼, ½, ¾, 1). Have students place the index cards in order along the number line. You can also have the student hold an index card and get in order on the number line.

Students can use the floor mat as a visual to help them with this process for the first few rounds. Once they get more confident, try facing away from the mat!

Grade 3, Grade 4

Which is larger?

General: Use the mat to compare fractions. Is 3/7 larger or smaller than 1/6? Why? Repeat with new fractions that have different denominators and numerators.

3rd Grade: Ask your students, “Which is larger, 3/7 or 1/7? Why?” Have students get on the mat and see which is more if needed. Repeat using different fractions with the same denominator.

4th Grade: Ask your students, “Which is larger, ⅓ or 1/7? Why?” Have students get on the mat and measure each fraction block to help them solve it. Repeat using different fraction questions.

Grade 3

3-in-a-Row

Have a student roll dice to create a fraction. Have the student put a marker on that fraction or on an equivalent fraction. Take turns between students until one student gets three in a row (touching)!

Grade 4

The Magical Number One

Take a look at the mat while standing at the bottom. What are all of the fractions you can see that are equal to one whole?
Name all the fractions that are equal to the whole (purple rectangle on the edges). Based on what you just named, how many 11ths do you think equal one whole? (11!) How many 20ths? (20!) If you have all the pieces of the whole (same number for numerator and denominator), you have the whole thing!
Is 2/2 equal to one? (Yes)
Is 4/2 equal to one? (No)
Is 8/1 equal to one? (No)
Is 5/5 equal to one? (Yes)
Is 7/4 equal to one? (No)

Grade 3

Fraction Madness

Create ten index cards with equivalent fractions, decimals, and percents for a fraction located on the mat. For example, create ten index cards that are equivalent to or represent ½. The ten index cards could be: 2/4, 3/6, 5/10, 6/12, 8/16, .5, 50/100, 10/20, .500, and 50%. You will need four sets of ten cards for this activity.

Spread the cards out on the Equivalent Fraction Mat. Divide your students into four teams of three to four students. Each team will need two bean bags (different colors for each team if available) and a small box or basket to catch the bean bags. Set the baskets about 2-3 feet outside each corner of the mat. Have each team of students stand behind a different basket. Assign each group a set of the fraction index cards you created. For example:
Team Blue – Collect all the cards that are equivalent to ½.
Team Red – Collect all the cards that are equivalent to ¼.
Team Green – Collect all the cards that are equivalent to ⅓.
Team Orange – Collect all the cards that are equivalent to ¾.

To collect cards, students from each team will go out onto the mat with a bean bag and stand on an index card. From where they are standing, the student will attempt to toss the bean bag into their team’s basket. If the student makes the basket, that student gets to pick up the card and place it in their team basket. Then, the next team member in line takes the bean bag for his or her turn. The game continues until all the cards are collected.

Option 2:
Create fractions cards with numbers having common denominators. Have each team collect the fraction cards following the instructions above. When all of the fraction cards are collected, each team will add the numbers on their cards to see who has the biggest number.

Grade 4

Bean Bag Toss

Toss a bean bag onto the mat. Hop to the bean bag and say the fraction the beanbag landed on out loud. Next, find an equivalent fraction (one that is the same size) by sliding your foot along the mat horizontally, using the black lines at the top of the fractions as a guide. If your foot slides to the top of another fraction they are equivalent. Name both fractions as equal. For example. Find 1/2, stand at the black line at the top of 1/2 box slide your foot towards the thirds, keep going until it hits the top of the 2/4 box. Stand back and see how 1/2 is equal to 2/4. Keep going across the mat to see what else 1/2 equals.

Grade 3

Matching Game – Decimals

Create index cards with various decimals on them (e.g. 0.25, 0.5). Flip the cards upside down around the mat. Now, pick up one card and find an equivalent fraction on the floor mat Place the card on the matching fraction. Repeat with a new card.

Grade 4

Matching Game – Percents

Create index cards with various percentages on them (e.g. 20%, 50%). Flip the cards upside down around the mat. Now, pick up one card and find an equivalent fraction on the floor mat. Place the card on the mat. Repeat with a new card.

Grade 4, Grade 5

Matching Game – Fractions

Create index cards with various fractions that can be found on the mat written on them. 1/2. 2/2, 1/3, 2/3, 3/3, 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 1/6, 2/6, 3/6, 4/6, 5/6, 6/6, 1/8, 2/8, 3/8, 4/8, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, and 8/8. Flip the cards upside down around the mat randomly. Now, pick up one card and find the matching fraction on the floor mat. Place the card on the matching fraction. Repeat with a new card.
