Sample Activity
Buddies
  • Notice that all the numbers have a corresponding number of symbols in their block.
  • First, have a student jump to the number 2. Ask the student to count the number of symbols in that block.
  • State that these two symbols are buddies and that two is an even number.
  • Next, have the student jump to the number 3 and count the number of symbols in that block.
  • State that two of the symbols are buddies but there is one symbol left over. Odd numbers have one leftover symbol. Three is an odd number.
  • Continue identifying even and odd numbers up the mat.
  • If your students become fluent with this activity, challenge them by having them throw a bean bag on the mat. Then, have them jump to the number that it lands on and ask them if the number is even or odd.
