Sample Activity
Buddies
  • Notice that all the numbers have a corresponding number of symbols in their block.
  • First, have a student jump to the number 2. Ask the student to count the number of symbols in that block.
  • State that these two symbols are buddies and that two is an even number.
  • Next, have the student jump to the number 3 and count the number of symbols in that block.
  • State that two of the symbols are buddies but there is one symbol left over. Odd numbers have one leftover symbol. Three is an odd number.
  • Continue identifying even and odd numbers up the mat.
  • If your students become fluent with this activity, challenge them by having them throw a bean bag on the mat. Then, have them jump to the number that it lands on and ask them if the number is even or odd.

Learn to count with these mats!

Are you looking for activities to help your preschool, kindergarten, or 1st grade class learn to count? Begin building their number sense by using our Make Sums mats! With three mat options and a full set, you can practice counting, addition, subtraction, and more with your preschool, kindergarten, or 1st grade class. Start using movement-based number sense activities and discover new learning opportunities as a result!

The Make Sums set includes our Make 7, Make 8, and Make 9 floor mats. Each is also sold separately. Each mat is a number line that includes numerals, symbols representing quantity, and the number words spelled out in large, kid-friendly text. With their bold colors, these mats will certainly keep students interested and excited about counting!

Watch your students’ number sense and number recognition grow as they jump, step, skip, and trace their way through new kinesthetic activities. Young students never like to sit still for long. The Make Sums mats will encourage active learning while helping students develop gross motor skills.

Above all, physical activity will reinforce students’ learning and improve their memory retention. In effect, counting activities for preschoolers shouldn’t be stationary anymore.

Once your class masters counting up to 7 on the Make 7 mat, you can easily move on to counting up to 8 on the Make 8 mat, and then 9 on the Make 9 mat! Preschool and kindergarten students will learn to recognize, read, and count in order all of the numerals and number words 0 through 9.

Counting activities for preschoolers can include identifying odd and even numbers. Get started on addition for kindergarten by hopping up on the number line. Then, introduce subtraction for kindergarten by jumping downwards on the number line. Use bean bags, blocks, or popsicle sticks as math manipulatives to make the numbers even more concrete.

Practice number order, play counting games, and solve basic addition problems while having lots of fun! The hands-on activities and games possible with this mat will certainly make learning to count an energetic lesson. Be sure to check out our activity database for lesson plan ideas. Your students’ counting skills, addition skills, and overall math skills will improve as a result.
